Adding RNG to your energy portfolio An anaerobic digester, as seen here, generates a biogas composed mainly of methane and carbon dioxide that can then be used to generate power, heat, or be upgraded/conditioned to renewable natural gas.

Adding RNG to your energy portfolio

As more companies seek to lower their carbon emissions, many are turning to renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG projects capture methane emissions that would otherwise be released directly into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change.

Considering adding RNG to your organization’s energy portfolio? Here are six benefits to consider.

1. Turn your waste into energy

Wasted food, crop residue, animal manure, and wastewater, among other methane-producing waste sources, can all be recycled into RNG.

2. Use existing infrastructure

RNG is a practical, immediate energy source. Common uses within our current infrastructure include transportation, thermal energy, and electrical power.

3. Achieve air-quality benefits

The air-quality benefits gained from RNG include more than just the capture and repurposing of methane. The process to create RNG captures and destroys other pollutants as well.

4. Address water-quality concerns

RNG projects have the potential to provide more comprehensive environmental benefits. For example, farm manure that is stored and treated in lagoons or pits before being applied as fertilizer can impair water quality. Handling the manure as a valuable product (fertilizer) and dosing it in a manner that allows it to be absorbed into the soil can help prevent water-quality issues.

5. Take advantage of legislative incentives

RNG is recognized under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) as an eligible transportation fuel. Recent funding bills, such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), have also earmarked money for RNG investment and expansion.

6. Meet near-term ESG and sustainability commitments

Organizations across market sectors are increasingly choosing RNG as a sustainable fuel source to help achieve near-term ESG and sustainability commitments.
